Texada Island Forest Reserve Ltd.

Forestry:
Texada Island Forest Reserve Land is covered with a dense second growth forest which is sixty years of age.
An active sustainable forestry program has been established focusing on commercial thinning to develop high quality Douglas fir and white pine stands. As well, there is active management of all age classes of red alder including plantations, spaced and pruned juvenile stands and mature forests.
Silviculture:
Texada’s high deer population defines many of Texada Island Forest Reserve’s silviculture strategies. Keeping costs low and establishing healthy plantations in this extreme browse situation is based on using locally collected seed, large stock and low density planting focusing on the best possible micro site and intensive yearly maintenance.
Agriculture:
Many of the properties that make up Texada Island Forest Reserve were originally homesteads cleared during Texada’s gold rush around 1900. As a result there are still several meadows and drained fields that have a relatively high agricultural capacity. Together with Honeysuckle Farm, Texada Island Forest Reserve has recently improved these cultivated areas with deer fencing, improved drainage and reseeding. As well, adjoining harvested areas have been managed to allow both grazing and silviculture within a silvopasture system. Honeysuckle Farm has also successfully completed and Environmental Farm Plan.
Commercial Building:
Texada Island Forest Reserve has built a commercial building in Gillies Bay. The building houses the Tree Frog Bistro and lodge and the offices for Texada Island Forest Reserve. The timber frame structure was built with timbers and lumber harvested from the Texada Island Forest Reserve.
