Summer Junior Crew Position (Forestry Technician)

We are seeking forestry trainees for our annual summer junior crew. Recent graduates and current forestry students in both technical college and university programs are invited to apply.

Work and learn alongside our innovative team of forest professionals in the rugged Selkirk mountains. All work is contained within the Kootenay region so no remote or camp shifts will be required. Off-road vehicles will be provided to workers for use during workday.

Job Title: Forestry Technician

Time Period: May 1 – August 31, 2023 (start and end dates flexible)
Work hours: 40 hours per week

Location: Monticola Kootenay operations are located near the communities of Salmo, Nelson, Fruitvale, Creston, Rossland, and Ymir.

Compensation: Determined by previous experience and qualifications.

Program Description:
Monticola offers a 4 month program to young forest workers with a unique combination of work and learning in the heart of the Kootenay forests. This is a field-based position, suited to hardworking aspiring professional foresters and forest technologists.

Trainee Program

Duties and learning will include:

  • Forest health monitoring and operational support
  • Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification (BEC) through soil texturing and plant identification
  • Forestry and operational planning, including harvest planning block layout and mapping.
  •  Timber cruising for log volume and value.
  • Road and machine trail design, mapping and layout.
  • Road maintenance inspections and support.
  • Silviculture surveys, prescription creation, brushing, surveys and reporting..
  • Access management of private properties.
  • Wildfire fuel reduction assessment and operational treatments.
  • Capstone project contributing to the innovative stewardship of client lands.
Required Qualifications:

  • Passion for sustainable forestry and forest ecology.
  • Recent graduate or currently enrolled in post-secondary forestry or environmental science
    program.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada, either as a permanent resident or Canadian citizen.
  • This is a youth position, available to workers between the ages of 16-30 years old.
  • Physically fit, ability to navigate rough mountainous forested terrain.
  • Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Willing and flexible to adapt to late minute shifts or project changes.
Additional Desired Qualifications

  • S100 Basic Wildland Firefighting training.
  • Experience handling chainsaws and other power tools.
  • Previous forestry experience.
  • Valid OFA 1 Certificate.
  • Experience navigating rough forest roads with trucks and off-road vehicles.
